Obsessing on Star Culture

I am convinced that when my older brother took the great dive into the gene pool, he took every good, normal gene right along with him. By the time that I jumped into that very same pool only three years later, it was devoid of water and the genes that I got to pick from were nestled in the dead leaves that had collected along the bottom.

Growing up, I did my absolute best to hide these faulty genes. Physically, they did not turn me into a three eyed monster with wings and clubbed feet. Mentally, however, I got pummeled: Depression, Social Anxiety Disorder, and the granddaddy of them all – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

My mother claims that she knew I was a little off, but had no idea the seriousness of it all until my senior year when the three of them intermingled and I had my first full-blown anxiety attack.

Now I could go on and bore you with the details of doctors’ visits, diagnoses and medications or even tell you about the tumor which I recently found out resides in my pituitary gland…but those stories are just about as fun as actually hanging out in a doctor’s office.

You see, upon finally getting medicated and going through some counseling, I stumbled into another addiction: Entertainment. I began to thrive off of media, pop culture and pop-princesses-turned-train-wrecks.

What started out as reading an “Entertainment Weekly” here or there has blossomed into walls plastered with photographs and obsessive blog reading. My brain, while being faulty (but on the mend), now contains massive amounts of entertainment and celebrity trivia. Sadly, much of this newfound knowledge surrounds the busted up mess that has become Britney Spears.

For some reason, I am extremely protective of Ms. Spears. Say what you will about her: She’s crazy, burnt out, extremely annoying, psychotic, insane, an untalented twit, etc. I honestly don’t care. What does make me care is the fact that she seems to be just as, if not more flawed than me. The difference, however, is that she’s in the public eye having her breakdowns at Starbucks with a cigarette in hand. I luck out and get to have them alone in my very own bathroom with no paparazzi banging down my door.

The question I often get asked when people learn about my dark obsession is simply why. Why do I care that George Clooney and Fabio nearly came to blows at a charity dinner? Why am I so angry that Brad Pitt dumped Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie? Why do I insist upon having an entire wall of my bedroom plastered with photographs of Britney Spears?

And to be truthful, I can’t give you a straight up, point blank answer simply because I don’t know why I care so much.

I honestly feel that my devotion to these messes from afar roots itself in the fact that deep down, these ‘celebrities’ are just as human as I am. They wake up looking like a hot mess every morning. They shamefully watch shows like the “The Hills,” but won’t admit it to their closest friends. They dance around their bedrooms listening to terrible pop music as they sing into their hairbrushes (you know you’ve done it at least once).

So yes, when one of them screws up, the little sadist in me jumps up and down with glee. I may not have gotten the best genes from the pool, but from the looks of it, neither have the A-Listers…and in the end, that makes those leftover genes seem not so bad.

My Writing Aspirations

A misunderstood conversation with one of my best friend's yesterday prompted me to think of my future goals and aspirations in a completely new way.

She was driving me to her house in the truck she's been driving since she was 16. This past week I've been trying to get over a terrible cold and just needed to get out of my stuffy, sick infested apartment and into the springtime air. Along the way, our discussion was on writing for magazines and my writing in general.

Now I have a confession.

For the last three years, I have absolutely abhorred writing.

As a senior high school, I wrote a 200 plus, single spaced novel. This was quite an accomplishment for the girl who hid this hobby from her closest friends.

When I packed up half a year later and went to college, it was as if my creativity completely burnt out and ran away screaming. The massive amounts of papers drowned me in words that I had absolutely no interest in.

And the articles I had to write for the few journalistic writing classes I was required to take?

Talk about complete loathing.

Newspaper writing and that in strict AP Journalistic style is something I can't stand reading, let alone think of writing.

Until this semester.

Upon my return to the States, I was signed up for a required Interviewing and Reporting Skills class. The transition back to the states and the fact that I found myself sitting in a class I absolutely didn't want to take was enough for me to throw myself into a panic attack.

To make a long story short, I dropped the class and found out when I was scheduling for the spring that it was only available in the fall. Thanks to a great adviser and Department Head, I was able to substitute another writing course in its place...but this time it was in an area that I'm obsessed with: magazines. I was still a wreck walking into that class, knowing my fellow classmates had years of journalistic writing for the paper under their belts and I had a lousy few stories here and there.

But it didn't matter.

Because it turns out that writing for magazines isn't the uptight writing that one reads in a newspaper.

And I fell in love with the style.

Thus my love/hate relationship with writing turned towards love again, thanks in large part to the fact that my witty, sarcastic, black humor was welcomed in these new articles.

Back story over, fast forward to yesterday's conversation in my friend's truck.

"You should look into writing, you know," she told me. "I can see you being a funny, dark humored Communist."

Completely baffled, I looked at her. "What do you mean?"

"Well you just seem to really like writing these strange articles."

I cannot tell you how long I sat there thinking over her words. How did my writing make her think that I'd be a great Communist? Did she think I should write regime papers? Had my terrible sense of humor been mistaken for some strange Communist philosophy? What was it about me that just screamed 'RED PARTY! RED PARTY!' to everyone?

I listened as she talked a little longer before it clicked in my head. I'd horribly misunderstood the conversation. Either she hadn't enunciated enough for me or my ears were horribly plugged from being sick, but I clearly had misheard something important.

"Did you say Communist or columnist?" I asked, already knowing what she'd say.

"Columnist, you dumbass."

And shaking my head, all I could think was: Wouldn't this be a great blog entry explaining the reason why I began this blog to begin with?

Since I've grown steadily closer to graduation, the thought of what comes next has increasingly began to freak me out.

This class has only managed to fuel me to start a career in magazines...and the thought of writing as a job no longer scares me shitless.

How's that for a misunderstood conversation epiphany?

Get [This Song] Outta My Head (Ay Ay Ay)

Oh Ashlee Simpson. Are you really still making music? For real? Were you not so scarred from your little incident on 'SNL' a few years ago, that it seemed like a good idea to put out yet another CD? As if you didn't break my heart enough when you started dating Pete Wentz, thus tainting any future songs he writes...not when I know they're now about you. Gah.

And damn you, Timbaland for collaborating with the younger Simpson sister. You know that your music and beats are damn near addicting. Apparently even you have a price, however, if you're willing to work with Ashlee Simpson.

Which is why with a heavy heart, I have to post this.

As much as I hate "Get Outta My Head (Ay Ay Ay)" (yes, that's the real title), I cannot quit listening to it. It's like it climbs into my brain and knows where my OCD is located so I have to put this horribly annoying song on repeat.

It has to be the beats. In no way is it the lyrics or Simpson's st-st-stuttering 'singing' which sounds more like words spoken to a beat.

And the music video...

Talk about a great way to lose brain cells.

Not since Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" have I felt myself get this stupid watching YouTube...and I should know since perusing YouTube is one of my favorite hobbies. I can watch a cat run into a wall over and over and not lose the amount of brain cells that I lose from this video.

For beginners, the video sees a 'vamped' up Ashlee rolling all around on a Rubix Cube in the sky. By vamped up, I mean that she'd be more at home as the ringleader of a circus show.

Then she goes on to flex her 'literary' muscles by re-enacting a Gulliver's Travel scene with little people crawling on her body. If only they'd waged a war on her body and ended the video sooner.

And if it can't get any worse, we later see her dressed up looking like Gwen Stefani which just seems insulting. In no way is Ashlee even of Gwen's caliber.

Let's examine the lyrics, shall we...with my comments in italics, of course.

What? Is that all you've got to say?
(Clearly, it's not, because you're going to talk whether or not I had more to say.)
What? What? You're rubbing me the wrong way
(Clearly she's delusional, because I wouldn't be rubbing her if my life depended upon it)
See your lips moving
But I don't catch a word you say
(Because she's too caught up in singing this song, getting it stuck in my head and driving me crazy.)
Shut up your chatter
(What great grammar. Shut up your chatter. Shut up your chatter. Shut up your chowder.)
I need for you to go away, uh huh

[ CHORUS ]
And all I hear is ay ya ya ya ya
(She must be speaking to a German.)
You're talking way too much
I can't even hear me now
(I'm surprised she can't hear herself...oh wait. Obviously I didn't shut up my chatter.)
All your noise is messing with my head
You're in my head
Get outta my head

Outta my, outta my head
Want you outta my head
Outta my, outta my head
Get outta my head
Outta my outta my head
Want you outta my head
Outta my, outta my head
That's what I said
(That's the chorus. That's all. It. Fini.)

What you looking at me for huh?
Show me respect or I will show you the door (Get out the door)
(She doesn't even wait for any respect. She just wants me to get out the door...like I have a closet full of spare doors and I'm just supposed to pull one out. The grammar in this song drives me insane.)
Lately, I've got a problem with the way that you behave
You're too much, and all your questions don't leave me no time for me, ha ha ha
(Imagine that. All about her. I bet in her mind, she's thinking about three things. 1. Being better than her under talented sister. 2. Wondering if her nose is still too big. 3. Being better than her under talented sister.)

[REPEAT CHORUS X2]
(Twice the chorus for dramatic effect.)

All your opinions, keep them to yourself
Just let me think so I can hear myself
(...Does she need to think out loud? Being a pain in the ass wasn't enough, now she has to be a fucking oxymoron?)
Wouldn't it be nice if I could just go solo, take the day off?
(Um...last time I checked, you were a solo singer. Unless you've adopted multiple personalities.)
I'd be alright if you would leave me to it, back out the door
Ay ya ya ya ya
You're talking way too much
You tell me one more time how I should live
I swear I'll bite your head off
(I'd like to see her unhinge her jaw and try.)
I am who I am And I can't be no one else
You got nothing left to say
(Somehow I doubt that since the song is still continuing.)
Keep your comments to yourself
Awww!
(Aww? AWW? How the fuck does this even FIT into the song?! Are we suddenly wanting the ponies and giraffes to get out of our heads?!)

Outta my, outta my head
Want you outta my head
Outta my, outta my head
Get outta my head
Outta my outta my head
Want you outta my head
Outta my, outta my head
(Sadly, this is the end.)

Words cannot even begin to express how much I hate this song...but what makes it even more terrible is that I have it on repeat. It's like there's subliminal messaging in it, telling me to listen to Ashlee Simpson, buy every Avril Lavigne CD and make a chocolate cake while I'm at it.

Damn you, Ashlee Simpson.

And damn you, Timbaland.

I can't even say that I want this song out of my head, because that just starts the cycle over.

Something tells me when I go to hell, songs like this are going to be on repeat...and while hell sounds like a good deal in a sense...if Avril or Ashlee are playing over the loud speakers, I'm probably going to wish I'd become a nun.

An Open Love Letter to Jordan Catalano

Jordan AKA Jared Leto in his former glory-

Like a pathetic fool, I spent most of my weekend catching up on episodes of 'My So-Called Life.' In the 90s, I can remember you being on and not really getting what was happening due to the fact that I was completely obsessed with other forms of pop-culture that people were trying to ram down my throat.

Clearly, if I would have known you existed, I wouldn't have wasted time on fools like Justin Timberlake (pre-banging Britney) and Nick Carter (pre-porno Paris). You're such a beloved asshole, it's no wonder Angela wanted in your pants so badly.

I may not have seen all the trials and tribulations you've put that girl through, but I've seen enough and I even know what's coming. But let's face it, how could she NOT fall for you?

I mean, your first words to her were, "It doesn't feel like a Friday." Smooth. And romantic. And that second episode kiss in your car with a girl you barely even know? Sounds like my own life, plastered on the small screen.

Despite all of this, you showed us you were flawed anyway. Can't read? No one ever taught you? My heart honestly went out to you. No wonder you acted the way you did. Product of nature.

It's because of this that we can forgive your other flaws. Pressuring Angela into having sex at a house the teens find it cool to trespass into and then getting upset when she goes to help her drugged up friend. Not going to meet her parents even when it took her days to get up the courage. Writing a song about your car when clearly she's going to think it's about her. Banging one of her best friends in the back seat of your car and having it filmed. Letting her neighbor who is also in love with her write your infamous apology love letter that wins her back.

Let's face it. Brian Krakow never stood a chance.

I understand why she watched him as the two of you pulled away. Thoughts of what could be. The safe choice. But fuck the safe choice. When was that ever any fun?

And even though you probably would have ended up living in Three Rivers the rest of your life (for real?? You named your band the Frozen Embryos?), I would have chosen you too. Put up with living in a dead end town in a dead end job.

But you're lucky, Jordan Catalano. You never had to live these particular tribulations as you only lasted a mere episode short of twenty. You're forever entombed in that world and thus perfect...a perfect asshole anyway.

And what girl doesn't love that?

If only you knew that one day you'd wake up as Jared Leto...35 (looking 25) and caking on the eyeliner. Who would have guessed?

Love--
J

An Open Letter to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pittsburgh Drivers

To the Aforementioned:

This morning -- January 22, 2008 -- I left my apartment at approximately 10:20 AM to make it to a class an hour later. What normally takes me a mere 8 minute drive to school took me well triple that. It is because of the below reasons. I wish you would read them and hopefully take note of this.

Approximately 10:35, my shuttle pulled out. It was snowing today, but nothing heavy or whiteout, I assure you. If anything, it was a light flurry. I should know the snow, because I grew up in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Ever heard of Lake Effect Snow? Well let me tell you. Lake Effect Snow's idea of a 'flurry' IS a whiteout. Judging from the looks of things on 5th Avenue (which took us 20 minutes to get through, by the way), you would have thought that we had thirteen thousand feet of snow and had become the fucking Arctic. Drivers were going about three miles an hour...and then we encountered another shuttle on the exit that seemed to go about one mile an hour.

My point to Pittsburgh drivers is this:

LEARN HOW TO DRIVE.

You would think that the Ice Age was upon us or that modern day cars moved at the pace of a snail. THEY DON'T. For all the 'defensive' driving you assholes do, you think you'd be speeding along in a flurry. You have four wheel drive. If you think it's that bad out, USE IT. If the snow terrifies you that much, then here's an idea...STAY OFF THE ROADS. Don't drive your car and waste your expensive gasoline. Take public transportation. Granted, that would require a bit of walking and a possible wait, but for God's sake, it'd spare the rest of us a little sanity.

As for you good old PENNDOT. I know that you seem to think that the good old Department of Transportation needs to fix the Boulevard of the Allies...but did you have to start construction in the middle of fucking JANUARY?! You know that people in Pittsburgh can't drive for shit in snow, so what do you do? Shut down one of the most used roads as if to spite those of us who grew up in places where people can drive. It's like you know it pisses us off and you're sadists that get off on this aggravation.

By the time that I finally did arrive at school, it was 11:10 and my class was about to start. By that point, however, the last thing I felt like learning about was American Literature. If anything, I wanted to go to the nearest bar and work on Getting Trashed 101...at 11:10 AM.

Use your heads. Pittsburgh Drivers + The LIGHTEST spattering of snow + Construction = A FUCKING NIGHTMARE.

This construction possibly COULDN'T wait till the spring when the greatest precipitation is rain and Pittsburgh drivers speed through it like it's just a fine mist on their windshields?

Learn how to drive and learn how people in this city drive.

Maybe then you'll see a difference.

Apparently I have a talented cervix.

A few years ago, I signed this online petition for Planned Parenthood...and of course, I was put on one of those e-mail lists that is nearly impossible to get off of. Today, I noticed they'd sent me yet another ploy to get me to go to one of their rallies or give them monies that I don't have...until the subject line caught my attention.

SUBJECT: I [heart] my cervix!

Dear Julie,

This is your cervix writing.

I know, you might've forgotten I existed until you got this e-mail just now (what with vagina and clitoris always hogging all the attention). I bet you wouldn't even recognize me if you saw me — me, your very own cervix!

The e-mail goes on to talk about Pap screens and HPV vaccines. It finishes with...

Love,
Your cervix

P.S. Don't have a cervix? Forward this e-mail to the people you love who do have cervixes!

I don't know about you, but I am super impressed by how talented my cervix is. I mean, I knew that it must have a hobby or two...but writing massive e-mails? Super awesome! Most girls have cervix's that just sit there...mine will spam the hell out of you.

I have officially decided that my e-mailing cervix is more impressive than my partially intact hymen (which made its status well known to my gynecologist who thought it was absolutely adorable) that wears a bow and tap dances.

My cervix deserves its own Time Magazine article like the ones they talk about in Fight Club.

I am Jack's kidney. I aid in Jack's excretory process.

I am Anna's heart. I pump blood throughout the body.

I am Kyle's brain tumor. I eat my way through some of the most important tissue in his body and grow like a young child.

Well, watch out guys.

I am Julie's cervix. I get bored and instead of watching reruns of "Nip/Tuck," I sent out massive spam e-mails.

Bitchin'.

Admit it. You're jealous.

The Recent Demise of Ms. Spears

At the start of last semester when I felt like my mind was completely disappearing, I decided to visit the school counselor. What was my problem? It seemed that I was too incredibly stressed out about school and life...and her suggestion?

Dedicate at least a half an hour to something I love every day.

Some people sing. Some people dance. Some people shoot guns and others make homemade bombs.

I stalk celebrities online.

My counselor said I needed something to alleviate my stress.

Which is how my online entertainment reading became an obsession.

I sit and read the blogs. I read all the entertainment Web sites. I read all of this as it is updated. I live and breathe and thrive on it.

And the target in the center of my Internet celebrity obsessions?

Ms. Britney Spears.

Love her. Hate her. I really don't care. You can knock her down. You can say she's a horrible mother. You can say she's crazy. Say what you want to say.

But Britney Spears has become America's new underdog. Half the people want to see her lose. Half the people want to see this amazing comeback.

I can remember in November of 2006 when news hit that she'd finally filed for divorce. Two kids since her last album release and once married and on the road to divorce. For Britney fans, Kevin was the ultimate anti-thesis. Here was this bum, feeding off her fame and money.

That day in November, I can remember thinking that her official comeback had started.

And for awhile it had.

I packed my bags and head overseas and what greets me in February? The start of her downward spiral.

You can say what you want about her shaving her head and beating cars with umbrellas. Say what you want about the multiple trips to rehab and the loss of custody. Say what you want about that flawed VMA performance. Her first CD in years -- "Blackout" -- was the diamond in the rough of a terrible year for the poor girl.

But notice that you're saying these things. You're paying attention to her.

And that's why she's still in the public eye.

So...mental illness or beautiful business ploy, Britney's found a way to make sure her name stays splashed across the headlines.

At the end of the day, when I sit back and see what havoc she's up to creating now, I almost take comfort in this. If anything, it shows she's human. She's bound to make mistakes...and that is the most humbling thing about her from this past year.

So go ahead. Say she's a mess. Say she's a 'terrible role model.' Say she deserves to be locked up.

But sit back and think about your life. Are most of you really that different? Do you really feel any different when experiencing a lot of the same situations she does? Granted, most of you don't have the paparazzi chasing you around or have every damn day of your life made public record...but think about it.

Had your heart broken? Your secrets made private? Something incredibly tragic happen to a loved one?

I thought so.

So lay off the poor girl. If 2007 and the start of 2008 should teach anyone anything, it's that even celebrities make mistakes. So she was knocked off her pedestal a few steps...

Britney will make a comeback.

Mark my words.
